Commodore’s Challenge Cup

Commodore’s Challenge Cup on Saturday 22nd July 2017
Plymouth, Devon, UK (1st June 2017): Following the successful inauguration last year by the RDYC of the Commodore’s Challenge the Royal Western Yacht Club of England is delighted to be able to offer a rematch.
The Commodore’s Challenge Cup will be held in the waters off Plymouth on the 22nd July 2017.
By invitation only and free to enter, the RWYC challenge the south west coast yacht clubs to enter one or more teams comprising of three separate classes of boat to compete in a fleet, racing in competition under the IRC rating rule to win the Commodores Challenge Cup.

A perpetual cup, the winning club will host the next event in their own waters, and it is expected that this will become a well- supported permanent fixture on the south coast’s sailing calendar.
The Cup’s aim is to encourage competitive and quality combined yacht racing amongst the participating clubs and to increase the collaboration between clubs in order to promote the region to the wider sailing community.
Charlie Thomson, Commodore of The Royal Western Yacht Club said “We are delighted to be able to support this prestigious event again, and offer our partner clubs in the south west the opportunity to win the second Commodore’s Challenge and take the Cup home to their own club.”
The challenge has ignited a competitive spirit amongst the participating clubs and event is being established as a permanent fixture in the region’s racing programme.
“Plymouth’s Sound is one of the best inshore sailing waters in the UK and what better way to celebrate this by supporting this annual event and bringing together some of the finest sailing talents. We are looking forward to the challenge!” commented Peter Rowe, race
director, on behalf of the sailing committee.
